Jenkins & Pain, an award-winning bodyshop based in Dover, set out to become one of the UK's first truly self-sufficient, off-grid bodyshops — eliminating gas consumption entirely and running on renewable energy generated on site. Having already achieved PAS 2060 carbon neutrality and transitioned to ARIES sustainability standards, the business had installed 360 solar panels four years prior — an investment that had already paid for itself. The next step was to replace ageing 15-year-old gas spraybooths with a fully electric spray finishing solution: one that could operate on the existing solar and battery system and remove the need for a gas supply altogether. Owner Dave Jenkinson also identified an opportunity to upgrade to robotic spray technology at the same time, having seen a demonstration of the PaintGo robot at Todd Engineering's facility in Rugeley, Staffordshire.
Todd Engineering designed and installed two new Zeus electric spraybooths at Jenkins & Pain's Dover facility, completing the entire installation out of hours — including early mornings, evenings and weekends — to minimise disruption to the bodyshop's ongoing operations. One of the two booths is a Zeus XR, incorporating the PaintGo robotic spray system. This is one of only three new-generation PaintGo robots to have been released worldwide, alongside installations in Italy and the USA. Todd Engineering is the sole UK distributor of PaintGo robot technology, with the system now on its latest software release — upgraded from 2D to 3D path control, allowing operators to direct spray paths using a finger-gesture interface. Both Zeus electric spraybooths are powered by infrared technology, delivering superior paint finishes and significant energy savings versus conventional gas-heated booths. They are fully compatible with the bodyshop's upgraded 200kW solar battery system, enabling zero carbon emission operation — with cheap-rate green electricity used to top up the battery overnight during periods of reduced sunshine. Key features of the Zeus electric spraybooth installation at Jenkins & Pain: — Infrared electric heating: the cure oven reaches operating temperature in 20 seconds, with clearcoat fully cured within five minutes of completing the paint cycle. Previously, clearcoat required 20 minutes to cure — a 50% reduction in cycle time. — LED lighting consuming 50% less energy than conventional booth lighting, offering unparalleled illumination, reduced glare and more accurate colour matching conditions. — Advanced filtration capturing 99% of pollutants, with double-skinned fire-resistant insulation panels for durability and long-term safety. — Full compatibility with on-site renewable energy generation, enabling gas-free, zero carbon operation throughout the working day. The Zeus XR robot is designed to support skilled spray technicians — not replace them. Staff at Jenkins & Pain received structured training from Warwick Binks and Tom Chen, with ongoing support from the Todd Engineering team. The result is a bodyshop that is measurably more efficient, produces a cleaner finish, and operates in a significantly improved working environment. Painters reported that the electric infrared heating creates a noticeably more comfortable atmosphere inside the booth, and meaningfully reduces exposure to isocyanates during operation. By the end of 2026, Jenkins & Pain expects to operate entirely on electricity generated on site — eliminating its gas bill and saving approximately £18,000 per year in energy costs.

These spraybooths are brilliant. When you turn the oven on, it's ready in 20 seconds, and after just five minutes of the job being done, the paint is fully cured. Not only that, but the oven only gets slightly warm — so it creates a much nicer environment for painters to work in.
